International Pension Structures Are for People Who...

Not everyone needs an international pension structure but for certain expats they unlock significant advantages in flexibility, tax efficiency, and estate planning.

  • Have lived or worked in more than one country
  • Plan to retire outside the UK permanently
  • Want greater control over pension investments
  • Hold UK pensions but currently live overseas
  • Need a tax-efficient international retirement strategy
  • Require flexibility in withdrawals and currency options

Understanding SIPs, QROPs, and QNOPS

Three distinct structures serve very different purposes. Knowing which applies to your situation is the starting point for any international pension strategy.

UK-Based Structure

Self-Invested Pension (SIP / SIPP)

A flexible UK pension that gives you full control over your investment decisions. Stays within the UK system ideal for expats wanting to retain and actively manage their UK pension.

Overseas Transfer

Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension (QROPs)

An HMRC-approved overseas pension scheme that can accept UK pension transfers. Designed for expats who have left the UK permanently and want their pension held in their new jurisdiction.

International Structure

Qualifying Non-UK Pension Scheme (QNOPS)

A non-UK pension structure recognised by HMRC but not eligible for direct UK pension transfers. Used for international retirement and estate planning by those living permanently outside the UK.

Self Invested Pensions

A SIPP is a UK based pension that gives you far greater investment flexibility than a standard workplace pension. Particularly popular with expats consolidating multiple old UK pensions.

Common Questions

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are QROPs still available for UK pension transfers?

Yes, but only to jurisdictions that remain on HMRC’s approved list, and subject to strict rules. An Overseas Transfer Charge of 25% can apply if you transfer to a jurisdiction where you are not resident. Specialist advice is essential never proceed with a QROPs transfer without a full suitability analysis.

Can I keep my UK pension instead of transferring it overseas?

Yes. Many expats benefit from moving their UK pensions into a SIPP which keeps the pension in the UK but gives them far greater investment control and visibility. A transfer overseas is not always necessary and we always explore this option first before recommending any transfer.

What is the difference between QROPs and QNOPS?

A QROPs is an overseas pension approved by HMRC to accept transfers from UK registered pension schemes. A QNOPS is a non-UK pension structure that HMRC recognises but which cannot receive UK pension transfers. They serve completely different purposes. QNOPS is typically for new savings and estate planning; QROPs is for transferring existing UK pension assets overseas.

Do I always need regulated advice before transferring my pension?

Yes. For Defined Benefit pensions over £30,000, regulated financial advice is a legal requirement in the UK. For Defined Contribution transfers, while not always legally required, the complexity of cross-border pension rules means specialist advice is absolutely essential. We never recommend a transfer without conducting a full suitability analysis first.

What happens if I move countries after setting up a QROPs?

This is a critical consideration. If you move to a country that is not the jurisdiction of your QROPs within five years of the transfer, an Overseas Transfer Charge may apply. Some QROPs jurisdictions are more flexible than others. We factor your likely future mobility into any recommendation particularly for clients who move countries regularly.
